Bethel School district had two existing schools on a 27 acre site in Spanaway Washington. The district determined that they would like both schools to be replaced and remain on the current site. In addition to site limitations was the desire to have both schools remain fully operational during the construction process. This created many challenges for all parties involved. Site developments began in June 2005, Chester Thompson Elementary was finished December 2006 and Spanaway Junior High was completed April 2007. The schools remained operational during all phases and moved into their new schools according to the districts schedule.
Spanaway Junior High increased in size to accommodating the growing student population within the district. The flexible commons area contains a stage with operable wall that allows it to function as a music classroom. The elementary school participated in the Washington State Sustainable School Pilot Program; therefore, both schools have day lighting elements; light shelves, ground loop HVAC systems; and incorporated renewable resource materials.
Spanaway Junior High is a new 100,241 square foot school with associated site improvements that replaced the existing 81,362 square foot school. The new junior high is 2 stories and is divided into classroom wings. The plan allowed for rain garden courtyards between the wings that integrate with the schools science curriculum. The commons opens to the front entry plaza creating a well used indoor and outdoor student gathering space.
