Mercer Island High School was a modernization and addition project. The entire campus was given a unified appearance with a new masonry exterior finish and sloping roofs. Numerous student spaces were created on both the interior and exterior of the modernized facility.

New construction included a commons/cafeteria, kitchen, performing arts center, administration area, library and special education department. School remained in session while approximately one-fourth of the existing campus was torn down and replaced in a twenty-month, five-phase construction program.
