Erickson McGovern - Architecture, Analysis & School Design

Approach to Design

Elements

“Architecture, above all, is about the people who will inhabit the space”

Erickson McGovern defines good design as functional, environmentally sensitive solutions that engage visual interest while meeting the needs of those using the building. This is accomplished  with careful consideration using key elements such as lighting, acoustics and air quality in a space that provides easy orientation, ultimately creating a comfortable space.

Balance

Erickson McGovern relies on a sensible and realistic design approach that aims to achieve less complicated forms. We understand that both new and old buildings must be designed to seamlessly connect with their surroundings in addition to the existing architecture. In remodeling projects, we are able to balance the important issues of current and future educational goals yet still maintain the “historical story” the building tells.

Economical

Facilities must be built and maintained in an economical manner. It is essential to incorporate energy efficient envelopes, mechanical systems, electrical systems, energy management systems and durable materials throughout the design process. We also carefully evaluate initial costs versus life-cycle costs for selected systems and materials.

Flexibility

"The building cannot be the change, the building has to allow the change”

Education is about growing. We expect our buildings to facilitate that growth and reflect that change. In fact, “expect change” is a phrase we are familiar with and prepared to hear. The uses and tasks performed in a building evolve over time. We are diligent in designing facilities with the flexibility to accommodate change.
